8-9 September 1998,  EUN Launch Conference

The
European Schoolnet is a response to the evolution in the use of ICT in schools all over Europe. It aims to establish a network of networks for the delivery via the Internet of tools and pedagogical information services with a European added-value to the schools of Europe. The EUN Initiative is currently supported by the Ministries of Education of 18 countries. 

The launching conference of the European Schoolnet took place on September 8-9 in Brussels with invited speakers including
Mr. Lucio Stanca (Chairman IBM Europe, Middle East and Africa),
Ms.Ylva Johansson (Minister for School and Adult Education, Sweden),
Mr. Domenico Lenarduzzi (Acting Director General, DG XXII,  European Commission),
Mr. Jean-Francois Abramatic, (Chairman, W3Consortium)
 

Pliroforiki Technognosia is the only Greek information technology company participating in this initiative.  Our role is to lead the activities of the Virtual Educational Multimedia Authoring Laboratory which shall make available to the EUN a complete toolbox of state-of-the-art educational hypermedia and multimedia authoring environments, together with appropriate training material for teachers and best practice examples.

6-19 July 1998,  Summer School on "Emerging New Technologies"

A  two-week postgraduate summer school on "Emerging new technologies in Education" was held during 6-19 July 1998, in Samos, Greece.  The event took place in the
Research and Training Institute of East Aegean (INEAG) and it was financially supported by the European Commission, Directorate General XXII, under the TMR (Training and Mobility of Researchers) Programme.  

The course was attended by 30 participants (researchers in the fields of educational software, software engineering, human-computer interaction, virtual reality and Web application development) from seven european countries.  

Dr Demetrios Sampson, R&D Manager of Pliroforiki Technognosia, was the organiser of the 1st week seminars. The main topics of the course were:
Multimedia in Education,
Virtual Reality in Education,
Web and New Media Technologies in Education.
Seminars were held during the first week by invited speakers from different European countries, while during the second week the participants of the course developed a multimedia product, applying the knowledge gained from the theoretical session of the event.

17-18 June 1998,  5th Telematics for Education and Training Concertation Meeting

Over 100
Educational Multimedia Taskforce and Telematics Applications Programme Education and Training Projects met at the first Joint Concertation Meeting in Brussels, June 17-18th. Over 160 people attended this event which was address by Mr. Rodriguez-Rosello, Head of Unit of Education and Training Telematics Sector in DGXIII. 

Dr Demetrios Sampson, R&D Manager of Pliroforiki Technognosia, was invited to chair the Parallel Session on School Networks and Teacher Training which introduced three topics: New learning environments for collaborative learning, Content development and sharing, and Support services and tools for schools (including Teacher Training, University/School, information services) 

European Commission recognising the long-term commitment to excellance in Educational Multimedia Software   has awarded Plirofiriki Technognosia with two major R&D Funds.   "NETLogo:the European Educational Interactive Site", was among the 27 projects selected for funding (out of the 839 submitted proposals) under the Educational Multimedia Taskforce Initiative. The NETLogo Web Site will be running for a group of selected trial schools during 1999, with the completed range of software, services and educational material available for widespread use in the year 2000.
